BMW Z4 M40i: the roadster returns to a manual transmission

[ad_1]

Despite the proliferation of automatic transmissions, the manual transmission remains an unrivaled fascination for many. Here because BMW will start production Z4 M40i with a clutch pedal, new since launch in 2019. The previous generation could have it, except for the range-topping 35i, later replaced by the M40i. The latter is based on an eight-speed ZF manual transmission in combination with a turbocharged B58, a 3.0-liter inline-six, capable of developing 340 HP. The aim of this addition is to satisfy customers anchored in “old traditions”, nostalgic for the past.

BMW Z4 M40i, the surprise of 2024 is a manual transmission. The 340-horsepower B58 engine could be paired with a six-speed manual transmission, as is already the case with the Toyota Supra.

This represents a unique selling point compared to major competitors such as the Audi TT and Jaguar F-Type, where this option is completely absent. In tight competition between models, the details influence the market’s verdict, and this feature could tip the balance in favor of the Bavarian company. This move may also be a response to the drop in registrations. According to the Jato Dynamics agency, the BMW Z4 sold a total of 5,448 units on the old continent in 2023, 260 less than the TT and 222 less than the Porsche 718 Boxster. The solution is likely to lead to a saving of around 500 euros, which will remain low, as is the case with the BMW M2 CoupĂ©.

The BMW Z4 follows in the footsteps of its sister car Toyota GR Supra Coupe, which last year also offered a six-speed manual transmission. However, the architecture will be different, closer to the M2. The manual Supra covers ‘0-100’ in 0.3 seconds longer than its automatic counterpart. It is reasonable to expect similar results for the German Z4. It is not clear whether the M40i will be produced in a limited edition, or instead will be offered in other versions of the Z4.

The company’s official spokespersons have avoided releasing information on the matter at this time. We’ll have to wait and see if that’s actually the case. Meanwhile, the adoption of the system is already significant news, seemingly surprising after its decline. Enthusiasts’ pleas have finally been heard: will they respond warmly?
