EU, agreement reached on regulation for approval of motor vehicles

AGI – The European Parliament and the Council of the EU reached an agreement on the regulation for approval and market surveillance motor vehicles (Euro 7), i.e. new rules for reducing emissions from road transport of cars, vans, buses, trucks and trailers.

The aim of the regulation is to promote transition towards clean mobility and keeping the prices of private and commercial vehicles affordable for citizens and businesses. Vehicles will have to meet the new standards for longer, ensuring they remain cleaner throughout their lifetime. For cars and vans, the negotiators agreed to maintain the existing test conditions Euro 6 and exhaust emission limits. At the request of Parliament, the number of exhaust particles will be measured at the PN10 level (instead of PN23, i.e. including the smallest particles).

For buses and trucksthe agreed text sets stricter limits for exhaust emissions measured in the laboratory (e.g. NOx limit 200 mg/kWh) and in real driving conditions (NOx limit 260 mg/kWh), while maintaining the current conditions of the Euro 6 tests.

The agreement also sets limits on brake particle emissions (PM10) for passenger cars and vans (3 mg/km for pure electric vehicles; 7 mg/km for most combustion engine, hybrid electric and fuel cell vehicles and 11 mg/km for large vans. It also introduces minimum lifetime performance requirements battery electric and hybrid cars (80% from the beginning of the life cycle up to five years or 100 thousand km and 72% up to eight years or 160 thousand km) and vans (75% from the beginning of the life cycle up to five years or 100 thousand km and 67% up to eight years or 160 thousand km).

The text provides a Ecological passport of the vehiclewhich are to be available for each vehicle and contain information on its environmental impact at the time of registration (such as pollutant emission limits, CO2 emissions, fuel and electricity consumption, electric range, battery life).

Vehicle users will also have access to updated information on fuel consumption, battery health, pollutant emissions and other relevant information generated by on-board systems and monitors. In addition, car manufacturers will have to design their vehicles to prevent tampering with emissions control systems through the digitization of car monitoring.
