It can also become the centerpiece, in a mini version. The leaves of these plants, available in different colors, shapes and sizes, will add a special touch to any environment. Generally, however, these plants do not survive the holidays, the leaves begin to fall and almost always end badly in January.
Experts from Stars for Europe (SfE), an association of European poinsettia growers involved in the campaign, funded with the help of the European Community, dedicated to this plant, offer advice from the moment of covering to keep the stars healthy and strong. and retain their vibrant colors.
‘Be careful when you buy’: choose plants that have the best chance of survival and growth.
The original form of poinsettias comes from Mexico, where thanks to the tropical climate typical of this Central American country, the plants grow into metre-high bushes. Over time, these plants have shown their preference for light and heat in the most modern forms cultivated today. Drafts and cold are poison for poinsettias, for this reason, it is good to make sure that the plants are displayed in a suitable place when buying. Plants placed in a dark corner of the store, in drafts, or outdoors in temperatures below 15°C lose their leaves within days of purchase and often die shortly thereafter. You can tell a healthy poinsettia or a poinsettia with a better chance of life by the lush, dense foliage that shows no damage and by the presence of yellow-green flowers in the buds in the center of the plant. The soil must be neither dry nor wet. Stars for Europe experts also do not recommend buying plants with glitter, it is better to choose a plant with the most natural “look” possible.
‘Cover them well’ to get them home.
After purchase, make sure the poinsettia is well wrapped and take it home quickly. Specialty stores, such as garden centers and nurseries, usually offer free special materials to protect plants during transport. If outside temperatures are below 15°C, take advantage of this opportunity. Even at higher temperatures, the packaging protects the poinsettias from drafts. The more layers of paper you wrap around your plant, the better it will be insulated from the cold. In sub-freezing temperatures it is also a good idea to fix the pot, as neither the pot nor the soil offer enough protection for the delicate roots. If you are transporting the poinsettia by car, avoid long stops on frosty days. Without heating, the car could cool down very quickly and damage even well-wrapped plants.
‘Training moment’: slowly get the plant used to the new temperature.
When you get home, quickly remove the wrapping from the poinsettia and take some precautions to help it settle into its new home. To make the transition from cold to warm for the plant as less stressful as possible, it is better not to move it to a warm room right away. While in cooler areas, such as the kitchen or conservatory, the poinsettia gets used to the climate better and in total peace. After a few hours, you can move it to its final location. Carefully choose the most suitable place to place the Star. The perfect place for these plants is bright, warm and protected from drafts and strong changes in ambient temperature (ideally between 15 and 22°C). For example, it is better to exclude the entrance door area, while in general there is nothing wrong with placing the poinsettia near a well-insulated window (it is important to move it to a protected place when ventilating the room, so that it is not exposed to air flow). Finally, if you choose windowsills, use a saucer to protect the plant from “cold feet”.
They don’t like extremes: poinsettias like warmth, as long as it’s not excessive. A place near a radiator or stove is not ideal, as poinsettias easily respond to excessive temperatures by dropping their leaves. In practice, the warmer it is, the more water you have to give the plant. Water in moderation: Poinsettias need little water and regularly Poinsettias tolerate mild drought better than excessive moisture: only when the top part of the soil dries out is it time to water it. The inside of the root ball should always remain somewhat moist, but no definitive answer can be given on the frequency of watering. In addition to the ambient temperature and humidity, the size of the flower pot is also important. Mini poinsettias in 6 cm pots need water more often than plants in 12-13 cm pots, due to the smaller volume of soil. These plants can be watered from above, below, or by immersion, and room temperature water is ideal. When watering from above, it is recommended to apply a small amount every two to three days until the root ball is evenly moist without being completely soaked. When watering from below, pour water into a flower pot or saucer, the soil will absorb the required amount. Continue adding water until the root ball is soaked and liquid remains in the saucer. When watering a nearly dry root ball, you should water it completely about once a week until the water stops bubbling. Finally, quickly lift the poinsettia, let it drain and put the plant back in the pot. In all three methods, it is important to remove excess water from the bowl or pot no later than 15 minutes later to prevent water stagnation and damage to the roots.
