Prisoners of San Vittore prepare food for the homeless – Society and rights –

Inmates of the San Vittore prison prepare hot meals that the Red Cross delivers to homeless people in the peripheral areas of the Milan municipality. It is the San Vittore Cook’In Heart project, an initiative of the Red Cross of Milan, in collaboration with the San Vittore prison, which starts every Sunday evening with around 50 meals prepared in the kitchen area of the women’s ward, with the aim of increasing production up to 150 meals a week to be offered important support for people in trouble, which the Red Cross street units have come across. The supporters of the project also include Coop Lombardia, which involved members of some Lombard cooperatives by donating the ingredients needed to prepare the meals.

With the San Vittore Cook’In Heart project, prisoners will also have the opportunity to acquire specific professional skills thanks to a partnership with the Galdus training school, which has organized a training course useful for acquiring the basic concepts for preparing meals suitable for distribution. The path also aims to strengthen the technical and professional skills of prisoners with a view to future employment in a free environment.

Finally, the team involved in the project will evaluate the possibility of allowing the prisoners involved in the project to actively participate in the distribution of meals.

“The cooperation between the San Vittore prison and the Italian Red Cross – emphasizes Massimo Boncristiano, president of the Milan Red Cross – is an expression of the commitment of two institutions ready to respond to the needs of the community. The goal is social reintegration provided that, according to the Constitution, we defend human dignity and alleviate the suffering of homeless people. ” The San Vittore Cook’In Heart project will run until July 31, 2024, with the possibility of automatic renewal from year to year.
